Purple Lilac

I planted my lilacs some years ago - may be 3 years ago?

 

They are growing very slowly. I have to pay more attention to them this season. I need to add some good soil, some compost, etc... I also need to make sure they are getting enough water - which is  a problem this year because of the severe drought here in California.
